Undersecretary Osvaldo Urrutia reiterated that aquaculture constitutes one of the main growth engines of the country and that it contributes significantly to food security, employment and the development of the southern regions of Chile.

In the city of Puerto Montt, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Osvaldo Urrutia, is participating in AquaSur2026, the main meeting of aquaculture at a national and international level. The official emphasized the need to strengthen governance, legal certainty and decision-making based on evidence.

The undersecretary Urrutia participated in the panel "Regulatory challenges for the sustainable growth of aquaculture", where he addressed the role of institutions in generating conditions for the development of the sector. Likewise, he also attended the discussion on "Opportunities and trends in aquaculture in international markets".

In that context, the undersecretary Urrutia reiterated that aquaculture constitutes one of the main growth engines of the country and that it contributes significantly to food security, employment and the development of the southern regions of Chile.

"Chile has built a leading position globally in aquaculture, and our challenge as a State is to continue consolidating that path with clear rules, strong institutions and science-based decisions," said Urrutia.

"Our focus is to drive sustainable growth in fishing and aquaculture, advancing a sector that provides certainty for investment, but at the same time responds to the environmental and social challenges that today's society demands," he added.

In the context of the 50th anniversary of the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) - which will be commemorated in December of this year - participation in AquaSur is seen as a significant milestone to strengthen the role of the State in the management of the sector, highlighting an institutional history that has been key to the development of fishing and aquaculture in Chile.
