It will train the technique of aquaponics, which allows growing vegetables, herbs and fish by combining hydroponics with recirculating aquaculture, where nitrifying bacteria transform the soluble waste from the fish into nutrients for the plants.

Acuiponía Chile Foundation secured funding from the 2026 Fund for Strengthening Organizations of Public Interest (FFOIP) of the SEGEGOB, for the implementation of the project titled: "Training in Integrated Cultivation for the Rural and Aquaculture Family of the Los Lagos Region".

This fund is key and aims to strengthen the country's social organizations to generate a direct and positive impact on their communities. Specifically, the technique of aquaponics will be trained, which allows growing vegetables, herbs and fish by combining hydroponics with recirculating aquaculture, where nitrifying bacteria transform the soluble waste from the fish into nutrients for the plants.

Within the advantages of aquaculture are:

  • Water saving: only the evaporated/evapotranspired or used in cleaning is replenished.
  • Less fertilizers: they are provided by the fish.
  • Scalable in small spaces and with a lack of soil/irrigation water.
  • Higher vegetable productivity through constant nutrition.
  • Healthy and traceable foods at home.
  • Lower water and carbon footprint (reuses water and reduces transport)
  • It promotes the circular economy in APE: it converts waste into resource and reduces pollution.
  • Adaptation to climate change: adjustable to different climates and areas.
  • Activity aligned to SDG/FAO.

According to the Executive Director of the Chilean acuiponia foundation and workshop rapporteur, the Mg and Ing in Aquaculture Gabriel Salvo Parra, the project will allow the holding of biointegrated cultivation workshops of the type acuipón, through 5 sessions to be held in a face-to-face manner and open to the community in the communes of Osorno and San Juan de la Costa.

In these sessions, the technical theory will be taught, for the management and monitoring of this type of systems; and practical activities, where a biofilter will be dimensioned and will build a module of 1 m3 volume, which is a model proposed by FAO and widely documented and disseminated by this international organization.

The workshops and activities associated with this project have no cost to participants and, at the end of the workshop, a certification given by the foundation will be available if all scheduled sessions are attended.
