The event will bring together experts and organizations from institutions such as IFOP, SChCM and Incar, who will analyze the advances, challenges and strategies to implement sustainable and effective policies in the management of marine resources in the face of climate change threats.

From the 12th to the 14th of November, it will take place Second International Seminar on Marine Resource Management with an Ecosystem Approach in Times of Climate Change: Advances, Challenges and ActionsActivity organized by the Institute of Fisheries Development (Ifop), and the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences (Schcm), has the support of the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (Incar) and will feature the participation of the Researchers of the Center's Integrated Program, Dr Doris Soto and Dr Carlos Molinet

«The Seminar aims to analyse the multiple perspectives and existing asymmetries regarding Ecosystem Management for the sustainable management of marine resources. The above is considered at local, regional and international scales, as well as in relation to artisanal and industrial actors, covering from socioecological research to management, including ocean governance. In this sense, we have wanted to involve a» set of various exhibitors with the intention of obtaining the greatest benefit in the expectation of identifying ways for this process. Currently, the Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) has not been easy to understand or implement, both in the environmental, ecological, social and even political sphere. Because of this, it is necessary to build discussion spaces where it is shown how to implement the EBM in an effective way for "the management of aquatic resources", explained the organization.

This initiative to be developed in the medium and long term is particularly relevant and timely when considering the deteriorated state of many fisheries and farming systems, the growing evidence of the impacts of climate change, and the pollution of the oceans. The discussion on how to implement the MEE is not trivial, given the multiplicity of views that exist on the matter and the need to define and propose public policies that are clear and timely. In this scenario, the scientific and technological advances that have had significant development in recent years should be taken advantage of, allowing for improved monitoring of marine and fishery systems, and thus obtaining a better understanding of the state of the ecosystems.

"Marine resources are vital to the economy, food and ecological balance of our planet. However, in a climate change scenario, these resources face unprecedented challenges. Increased temperatures, ocean acidification and sea level rise are directly affecting marine ecosystems and their dependent species. Ecosystem management plays a key role in addressing climate change, focusing on the conservation and sustainable use of resources natural in the context of whole ecosystems. In the case of marine resources, ecosystem management provides a comprehensive approach to addressing the impacts of climate change. Management with an ecosystem approach in fisheries and aquaculture, whether in its strategic or tactical application, promotes balanced progress towards the objectives of conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources in the long term", stressed the Dr. Soto, who joins the Organizing Committee of the event.

Incar researchers will present at the session "Management of Aquaculture with an Ecosystem Approach" on November 13, and will consider the presentations "Implementation of Ecological and Restorative Salmon Aquaculture in the Climate Crisis: Pathways for its Radical Transformation at an Industrial Scale", by Dr. Barry Costa-Pierce (Nord University, Norway); aquaculture within the framework of an ecosystem approach”, by Dr. José Aguilar (FAO Chile); “Aquaculture and its challenges: economic approach and climate change”, by Dr. Gastón Vidal (Ifop); “Esistemic Approach: How do we make it operational?”, by Attorney María Alicia Baltierra (Asesora Jurídica SalmonChile), “Interaction between benthic fishing and aquaculture: Aquaculture based on seed capture and repopulation of benthic species based on aquaculture”, by Dr. Carlos Molinet (UachA-Incar) and “Advances in the implementation of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture considering the carrying capacity of ecosystems: the case of salmon farming in Chile”, by Dr. Doris Soto (UdeC-Incar). In addition, the Incar Principal Investigator will moderate the session "International Experiences II".

The International Seminar will conclude with the preparation of a document on the different concepts, visions, discussions and recommendations for the definition and design of public policies emerging from the Seminar, with a view to sending them to those responsible for the management of marine resources and to the general public.

Simpaee will be held from 12 to 14 November, at the Honor Hall of the Central House of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso (PUCV), located in Av. Brazil 2950, Valparaíso, and is sponsored by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso (PUCV), Sociedad Nacional de Pesca (Sonapesca), Centro Interdisciplinary para la Investigación Acuícola (Incar), Instituto de Investigación Pesquera (Inpesca), Oceana Chile, Instituto Technological of Salmon (Intestal) and the Center for Research of Patagonian Ecosystems (CIEP), and sponsored by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), COPAS Coastal Center, the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACh), the University of Magallanes (UMAG) and The Nature Conservancy Chile (TNC).
