The initiative is part of the "Small-scale aquaculture pilot project in Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda", led by Chinquihue Foundation and the GEF Coastal Marine Governance project, implemented by the FAO.

A series of proposals were collected in the context of the Workshop on good practices for small-scale aquaculture in Raúl Marín Balmaceda, led by professionals of Chinquihue Foundation and from which the community of Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda actively participated, Cisnes commune, Aysén region.

The activity, carried out in the context of the project "Pilot of small-scale aquaculture in Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda", addressed various aspects related to the need to advance in the application of good practices within the productive activity in that locality.

In Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda there is currently Multiple Use Conservation Area (ACMU) Pitipalena-Añihué, an area of 239 km2 in which various productive activities are carried out, such as artisanal fishing, small-scale aquaculture (SPA), tourism, navigation, among others.

This is why the topics covered in the context of the workshop included environmental aspects, production scales, regulatory systems, institutionality, as well as their impact on the coastal community, among others.

Miguel Moreno Bonilla, regional project coordinator GEF Marine Governance-Costerathe Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, by its acronym in English), explained that "there has been Significant progress the manual, particularly because it is being created collaboratively with the community for the development of small-scale aquaculture, which has ecosystem approach in the context of a place like Raúl Marín Balmaceda, which hosts an area of marine conservation.

Along the same lines, Moreno specified that this product, which is part of the project mentioned above and which will end during this year, "has a local-based approach, in the human beingin the ecological (...). The manual seeks to formalize a context of good practice management, which has to do with the construction of governance, agreements, decision-making around collaboration and new approaches to the production processes for the cultivation of marine products".

By their part, Jorge Tillería Mendoza, head of hatchery Chinquihue Foundation and technical manager of the project, said that "small-scale aquaculture is a good alternative production for coastal communities, as well as an important complement to artisanal fishing, which enables them to enhance their development and improve their revenue".

Tillería also explained that "as Fundación Chinquihue we want to be part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as explained in the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UNO)in particular with regard to the Goal 14whose central idea is to conserve and sustainably utilize the oceans, seas and marine resources. In this sense, it is entirely plausible to work in a Good practice manual for small-scale aquaculture in Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda, thus advancing towards a sustainable aquaculture in the territory”.

Pilot

Last February, more than eight thousand seeds of the following species were stocked: Pacific oyster (Pacific oyster) and two thousand north oyster (Purple scallop) in two aquaculture concessions of Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda, this in the context of the aforementioned project, which consists of a pilot in full development and that will end with the end of the crop cycle of these two species.

The results will then be analysed and the possibility of new sowing, as well as the incorporation of other species of interest to local producers.
