The "Statistical Fishing and Aquaculture Yearbook" has launched a new platform that provides updated data from the year 2000 to date. This user-friendly platform includes regulations, guidelines, indicators on landings and aquaculture, a list of species by region, information on raw materials and production, as well as details on fishing plants. The data is available openly and accessible for the industry, the decision-makers, researchers and the general society.
Sernapesca and Data Observatory (DO) launched a platform that provides user-friendly data on industrial, artisanal fishing and aquaculture in Chile, with a 22-year history. These data are open and can be accessed by decision-makers in the public and industrial sectors, as well as by researchers and representatives of civil society.
In December 2022, Sernapesca signed a collaboration agreement with Data Observatory (DO), a non-profit entity dedicated to acquiring, storing, processing, analyzing and providing large volume and quality data sets.
So far, Sernapesca published a fishing annual with data from the entire national maritime territory, but these were in different formats, making it difficult to consult for many. The new platform brings together data collected by Sernapesca, processed and validated, including landings classified by region, operating fishing plants, regulations and laws, statistics and a list of species categorized nationally.
Rodrigo Roa, executive director (I) of Data Observatory, commented that the platform is an open data repository, publicly available and can be freely distributed, always ensuring the security and reliability of the data.
Soledad Tapia Almonacid, National Director of Sernapesca, expressed her satisfaction with this alliance, as it allows offering more accessible information to the public. "Sernapesca expects to improve and move towards a predictive stage, with the help of specialists and in a collaborative and innovative approach," said Tapia.
This agreement is aligned with the mission of Sernapesca as a public body responsible for overseeing the compliance with fisheries and aquaculture regulations, contributing to the sustainability of the sector and the protection of hydrobiological resources and their environment.
