The event, organized by PTEC-INVA, will take place at the INIA Carillanca Regional Center and will bring together researchers, producers and representatives from the agricultural and aquaculture sectors to discuss the creation of a third sustainable industry that unites the best of both worlds.

The next Wednesday 29 October, among the 09:00 and 14:10 hours, will take place the international seminar titled Creating a third industry, which is organized by the Technological Program for the Local Production of Nutritional Inputs for Aquaculture (PTEC-INVA), an initiative driven by the Corporation for the Promotion of Production of Chile (Corfo), led by Antarctic Salmon and whose co-executing entities are the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), the Food Technology Innovation Center (CeTA), Agrotop Companies, Veterinary Histopathology Center (VeHiCe) and the universities of Chile (University of Chile) and Catholic University of Temuco (UCT). The event will take place at the Regional Research Center INIA Carillanca, located in the kilometre 10 of the Cajón-Vilcún road, La Araucanía region.

The meeting will bring together representatives of each productive sector that integrates the agro-acuculture ecosystem, with the purpose of opening a space for analysis and conversation on how the agriculture and aquaculture are strategically linked to project a third industry combining the potential of both sectors.

From theory to practice

A number of key themes will be addressed during the conference: more promising crops and vegetables for the development of inputs, until the emerging markets, global food demand and the challenges of Productive sustainability.

The seminar seeks to be a space for evidence and make concrete advances in agro-acuculture articulation visibleprojecting new opportunities for the economic and scientific development of Chile.

The manager of PTEC-INVA, Dr Daniel Nieto Díaz-Muñozhighlighted the relevance of the meeting: “We are facing a historical moment in which agriculture and aquaculture can be found to generate a new joint productive sector. What we're looking for with this seminar is to show how both worlds are already in dialogue, what progress we have made and what opportunities are open for Chile and the world when thinking of a third industry that is born from this synergy”.

In addition, he stressed that innovation will be the central driver of this process: “Our challenge is move from theory to practice. We want to clearly identify which crops are the most suitable, how to transform them into quality inputs for aquaculture, and how to create a sustainable business model that it can compete in global markets. That is the essence of this seminar: Build with evidence and vision for the future.”

Public-private-academic linkages

The Director of the INIA Carillanca Regional Centre and Deputy Director of PTEC-INVA, Dr. Claudia Osorio Ulloastressed the importance of the regional and scientific role in this conversation:

“The Araucania will be the epicenter of this discussion, because from here we can articulate producers, researchers and companies around the same challenge. Our aim is to make this seminar a platform for the exchange of knowledge and to move towards real solutions that unite agriculture and aquaculture in a sustainable and competitive model.”

Likewise, he emphasized about the strategic projection of the joint work: “Chile has a unique opportunity to lead in agro-acuculture innovation. If we succeed in consolidating a third industry, not only will we diversify our productive matrix, but we will also be able to better respond to global demands for healthy, traceable and sustainable food. This is a starting point, but with enormous potential for impact.”

For the regional director of Corfo La Araucanía, Eduardo Figueroa Goycolea, the PTEC-INVA is a clear demonstration of the results that can be achieved when working collaboratively.

“The articulation between academia, research centers and the private sector is not simple, but when there is a common purpose, it is proven to work. From Corfo we strongly support this alliance, which allows us to link two highly competitive industries in our country and to open, from innovation, research and development, a new industry based on agricultural inputs for salmon farming, with a fully sustainable approach,” concluded Eduardo Figueroa.

As you can see, the event is projected as a milestone for innovation in food productionstrengthening the road to a industry combining agricultural and aquaculture wealthgenerating added value and contributing to regional and national development.
