The projects are related to the monitoring of environmental variables and the development of a technical input proposal for a calculation report for the funding and installation of cultivation modules in exposed areas. The latter also includes the analysis of the applicability of Exempt Resolution 1821 of the Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) and its modifications regarding oceanic aquaculture or high exposure areas.
The Strategic Technology Program for the Development of Ocean Aquaculture (PTECAO) continues to meet each of its set objectives. And if in March it already received unanimous support from each and every one of the members comprising the Strategic Council of the Program approval of the Validation Plan of the technologies developed in the first stage (Infrastructure and enabling services were generated for fish farming in exposed and/or high energy areas in Chile), now, to continue achieving milestones, it has launched a new public bidding process in order to have external expert advice.
This process is mainly aimed at the community of scientific-technical service providers and/or research institutions for the development of a Proposal of technology for continuous and transmissible monitoring of environmental variables for oceanic or exposed aquaculture and for the Analysis and proposal of technical elements for the preparation of a calculation report for the mooring and installation of cultivation modules for ocean aquaculture or exposed areas.

The director of PETEAO, Dr. Daniel Nieto Díaz-Muñoz, said that, “we invite specialized service companies and researchers to participate in this bidding process requesting the respective bases at no cost to dnieto@acuiculturaoceanica.cl (to this same email you can request the technical terms of reference, TTR, with deadline at 17:00 hours on next Monday 9 May). In this way, they can contribute to our objectives to continue to demonstrate all the positive ranges of fish farming in exposed or high-energy areas”.
Homologating technologies to conditions offshore
The innovative technologies that have been manufactured within the framework of this programme promoted by the Corporation for the Promotion of Production (Corfo) have been developed by the supplier companies. Walbusch, Aquarov and AST Networkswhile its validation is being carried out in the salmoniccultor company Marina Tornagaleones Farm (GMT – Marine Farm), specifically in the high-exposure culture centers “Quillaipe” (in the image below) and “Pirén” (outstanding photo).

In this context, Dr. Nieto said that these are not necessarily oceanic areas, sea outside (far from the coast) or offshore as it is known by its name in English, “because both centers are located in the inland sea of the region of Los Lagos, but because the waves are between four and six meters, currents of three knots and strong winds, represent oceanographic conditions similar to the offshore, so these technologies, which are even already being sold on a commercial scale, can be approved for this purpose. (see here the video with images of the wind and rain storm of late April and that shows the behaviour of cages in the center "Pirén")”.
In turn, he added, these conditions allow for greater animal welfare for fish, as it increases the replacement of water, oxygen, among others. positive characteristics for salmon farming and your quest for environmental and productive sustainability.
