The platform is already available on Subpesca's website to submit proposals, either by filling in the available form or uploading documents through that space. This is added to the fact that territorial workshops will be carried out.

Finalizing a new step towards a General Aquaculture Law, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Subsecretariat (Subpesca), started on 31 July the participatory stage of specific discussions on the content of the bill, which will be carried out through territorial workshops and through a web platform that is already available.

Just as it happened for the New Fishing Law project, the Government seeks to work on a specific regulation for this sector that is the result of an open and transparent debate, and that addresses the challenges that aquaculture faces for the coming decades; considering its important social and economic role, and its direct contribution to national and global food security.

Therefore, the idea is to advance in specific discussions on the content of the Bill, which will allow identifying key elements for the sustainable and competitive development of Chilean aquaculture, which will translate into essential inputs for the preparation of this project, which is expected to be presented during 2025.

Already at the end of 2023 a dialogue process was carried out with a main focus on Small Scale Aquaculture, which resulted in 24 local meetings, eight meetings with the scientific community, nine regional and/or macroregional meetings, as well as two regional scope meetings, which counted with the participation of more than 750 people. This work was documented by the University of Valparaíso in a final report that also forms part of the inputs that Subpesca has in view to accurately reflect the needs and aspirations of the aquatic community in Chile.

Eight pillars

For the purposes of organizing the participatory process, eight pillars were identified, consisting of large content/thematics that should be addressed in the regulations, these are:: Access, Aquaculture, Environmental (Sustainable Approach), Animal Health and Welfare; Research for Decision-making; Control and Punishment, Productive Chains and Marketing; and Governance.

All the above in order to enable stakeholders to generate specific proposals associated with these issues, through two mechanisms: form available or uploading, through the platform, a document with proposals. To this is added that Subpesca will shortly announce the dates of territorial workshops. All of the above can be reviewed here.

It should be noted that the institution enabled the mail box: consultasleydeacuicultura@subpesca.cl to send questions or queries related to the process of General Aquaculture Law.
