In Puerto Montt, regional capital of Los Lagos, Sernapesca carried out the Small Scale Aquaculture Regulation Implementation Macrozone Workshop. The event, which lasted three days, had the exclusive participation of officials from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service from the Araucanía to Magallanes regions, both in person and remotely, on its first two days. On the last day, representatives of Subsecretariat, INDESPA, and also users and users of the sector.

The objective of the first sessions was to strengthen support for compliance with regulations for those carrying out aquaculture activities, as well as to assist in the delivery of statistics by users and in the management of emergencies. The third session focused on disseminating and reinforcing the current regulations, the good practices manual and the necessary conditions for the activity. The roles were also clarified. the institutions present: the Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, responsible for regulating the activity; Sernapesca, responsible for implementing the regulations through dissemination and inspections; and INDESPA, which funds activities associated with the implementation and development of the APE.

The national sub-director of Aquaculture of Sernapesca, Mónica Rojashighlighted the importance of advancing the implementation of the APE regulation, the registration of users and the promotion of the participation of the sector in the programs established by Sernapesca. “We have the participation of representatives of the producer sectors, who accompanied us with their comments and consultations. There was an important group of producers in the Los Lagos region, but there was also representation of the Araucanía and Aysén, where we were able to know from them their major concerns and how we can improve our processes to improve the implementation of the APE regulation.”

By their part, Claudio Torres, representative of the Union of mussel producers of the Caicaén Canal, Calbuco, and director of the Association of Mussel Producers of Calbuco, appreciated the instance in which the three institutions met. “I am grateful that they have come closer to the territory, there is certainly much to learn, there is much to strengthen and there are many gaps to overcome still, but I believe that these are the instances, those of dialogue, of the institutional knowledge of the tasks that they do and of how we work that we are Small-Scale Farmers. It was a very enriching workshop.

From the point of view of financing, Leonardo Llanos, National Director of INDESPAstressed the importance of knowing the needs of users and users. “I find it fantastic that we have the possibility to get together with the institutions and also with the users to be able to know a little about their requirements and their needs. We were able to tell you today how we are structuring the financing of Small Scale Aquaculture, a super important sector for INDESPA. That is why from the year 2024 We separate the Artisanal Fishing and APE programs so that they have different budgets according to their requirements.”

Finally from Subpesca, the National Manager of Small Scale Aquaculture, Daisy Carreñostressed the importance of these initiatives in building links with the people who participated. “These instances that Sernapesca has generated are very relevant, since it generates a direct link with users and users, in which we can explain the regulations, land them, and in turn users and users soak us with everything that has to do with their problems and gaps.”
