The Los Lagos region (+3.8%), Aysén (+7.9%), Magallanes (+5.9%) and Biobío (+4.3%) recorded some of the highest national growth rates in the report released by the Central Bank.
According to the Regional GDP Report, published on Tuesday by the Central Bank of Chile, aquaculture was consolidated as one of the most relevant economic activities in the country during the second quarter of 2025.
The regions of Los Lagos (+3.8%), Aysén (+7.9%), Magallanes (+5.9%) and Biobío (+4.3%) recorded some of the highest growths at national level. According to the data, areas with strong aquaculture presence lead the regional activity, with positive effects on employment, productive linkages and household consumption. In total, five of the six regions with the greatest expansion this quarter have an important salmon farming.
The president of SalmonChile, Arturo Clément, highlighted that "the Central Bank data confirm that salmon farming is an activity with a direct impact on regional and national economic growth. This productive sector provides employment, productive linkages and strengthens numerous small and medium-sized companies located in the southern macrozone of the country."
"We are not only contributing to economic growth, but we are also generating stability in local economies. That is why it is necessary to continue promoting productive diversification, strengthening linkages with other industries and consolidating sustainable employment opportunities in the territories where we are present," clarified Clément.
In a context where the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.1% in the same period, these figures show that aquaculture maintains a relevant role in the economic recovery and the dynamism of the southern regions.
