The body promises to be key to the development of new strategies, contributing to the sustainable advancement of aquaculture and also of agriculture.

The Catholic University of Temuco (UCT) it is preparing to be the host of the international seminar titled Functional and sustainable ingredients for optimal nutrition in fish production, in a scenario of climate change, water scarcity and demands for new nutritional inputs, which will take place on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 September.

This initiative, led by the Fish Nutrition and Physiology Laboratory of the School of Natural Resources through the Food Production Research Center (NIPA-UCT), has the important support of the Interdisciplinary Water Institute (IIA - Rukako), of Antarctic Salmon and the Technological Program for the Local Production of Nutritional Inputs for Aquaculture (PTEC-INVA) driven by the Corporation for the Promotion of Production of Chile (Corfo).

"Este seminario internacional -que se desarrollará en el Auditorio Óscar Cartagena del Edificio Cincuentenario del Campus Juan Pablo II de la UCT, ubicado en Rudecindo Ortega 2950, commune of Temuco, region of La Araucanía- is designed to be a knowledge exchange platform, bringing together experts to discuss and explore new solutions and technologies that allow to improve nutrition in fish production. All this, considering the current context of climate change, water scarcity and the increasing demand for innovative nutritional inputs, a scenario that falls within one of the main sustainable development goals of our agenda PTEC-INVA“ explains Corfo’s technology initiative manager, Dr Daniel Nieto Díaz-Muñoz.

Leading modules and participants

During the two days of activities, the seminar will offer a series of modules addressing key themes for the future of animal nutrition.

That's how he Thursday, 12 September the modules will be “The future of ingredients in animal nutrition and nutrition” and “Biotechnological potentialities of single-cell micro-organisms of interest in animal nutrition”; next day shall be “Nutrition, animal health and animal reproduction” and “Production and scaling of protein and lipid ingredients of plant origin for animal nutrition”.

The event will have the participation of leading international researchers such as the Dr. Monica Betancort of the Stirling University (Scotland), the Dr. Daniel Montero of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and Dr. Wellim Pereira de la University of Sao Paulo (Brazil). Also present will be recognised national researchers, among them the Dr. Jurij Wacyk of the University of Chile (together with the UCT are the two universities that make up the PTEC-INVA) and Dr. Alejandro Villasante of the University of the Americas – Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), in addition to scientists and scientists of the Laboratory of Nutrition and Physiology of Fish UCT.

Similarly, representatives of important companies in the sector, such as Corbion and Antarctic Salmon, and of the other co-executive entities of PTEC-INVA (Institute for Agricultural Research, Saprosem/Agrotop, CeTA Food and laboratory VeHiCe), will be present to expose and share their knowledge.

A unique opportunity

Dr. Patricio Dantagnan, who is a full professor at the Catholic University of Temuco, co-founder and director of the Laboratory of Fish Nutrition and Physiology, as well as an active member of the NIPA of the same house of studies, emphasized that this international body to be developed in a territory forming part of the southern zone of Chile “promises to be a key event for the agricultural and aquaculture production sector, offering a unique opportunity for the development of innovative strategies in animal nutrition.”

In turn, Dr. Dantagnan stressed that this collective effort seeks to contribute to the advancement of aquaculture and agriculture, “linking both areas to create a third industry born from the awareness that we are in a scenario of Global challenges such as climate change and water scarcity, as sought by PTEC-INVA that, with the Corfo support, allows the private sector to articulate with the state and the academy to maintain a sustainable development”.

To close, Dr. Dantagnan stressed that the event will also expose research coming from different projects Development Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (Fondef) and the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (Fondecyt) carried out by representatives of PTEC-INVA and the Laboratory of Nutrition and Physiology of Fish UCT.
