The "Combating RAM in Aquaculture" cycle, organized by the CASA Collaborating Centre and the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OMSA), will start on September 1st with a seminar dedicated to biosecurity as a fundamental strategy for the prudent use of antimicrobials.
The Collaborating Center CASA and the Americas Regional Office of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) invite professionals, researchers, students and representatives from the aquaculture sector to participate in the new series of webinars Combating RAM in aquaculture, whose first meeting will be held tomorrow, 1 September 2026.
The initiative includes two virtual meetings that will address the role of the biosecurity and the welfare of aquatic animals in disease prevention and in promoting the prudent use of antimicrobials in aquaculture.
The cycle seeks to create a space for learning and knowledge sharing around preventive strategies and good practices that contribute to addressing antimicrobial resistance (RAM), one of the main challenges for the sustainability of productive systems.
Biosafety as a pillar for the prudent use of antimicrobials
The first seminar, which will start this series, will be held next 1 September 2026under the title:
“Aquatic Animals Biosafety: Fundamental Pillar of Precautionary Use of Antimicrobials in Aquaculture”
The session will address the importance of strengthening disease prevention and control strategies through biosafety, highlighting its contribution to the protection of aquatic animal health and the reduction of the need to use antimicrobials.
Date: 1 September 2026
Time: 13:00 p.m. (GMT-3, Argentina time)

Animal welfare and disease prevention
The second session of the cycle will take place on 20 October 2026 and will focus on the relationship between animal welfare, stress, disease and antimicrobial use.
Under the title “Well-being in Aquatic Animals: Less Stress, Less Diseases, Less Antimicrobials”the seminar will address how strengthening the welfare of aquatic animals can contribute to reducing the factors that favour the onset of diseases and, consequently, reduce the need for antimicrobial use.
Date: 20 October 2026
Time: 13:00 p.m. (GMT-3, Argentina time)
Registrations: https://oie.
Both sessions will have simultaneous interpretation in Englishfacilitating the participation and exchange of professionals and specialists from different countries.
Through this new series of seminars, the CASA Collaborating Centre and the WHOA Regional Office for the Americas seek to strengthen the dissemination of knowledge and dialogue around preventive strategies that contribute to more sustainable aquaculture and the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
