Developments allow the automation of the extraction process of mortality, improving animal welfare and minimizing the exposure of people to risks inherent to these operations.
In line with its commitment to more efficient and sustainable aquaculture, Multi X patented two new innovations applied to operations in seawater. These correspond to a Integrated Mortality Extraction System and a essential valve for its operation, which allows the company to automate the removal of mortality from the cage to the silage, thereby reducing critical tasks in terms of safety for those involved in these operations. Additionally, these innovations benefit the health and welfare of the fish.
With this, the company now has a portfolio of five unique patents in Chilean salmon farming: a machine for caligus baths; two culture center nets, one a lobster net and one a fish net; and now the integrated mortality extraction system and its valve, patented independently.
Patricio Zúñiga, Operations Manager of Multi X highlights that "this new mortality extraction system facilitates a process that has historically been complex for the salmon farming industry and not only represents an efficient and sustainable solution for us, but also for all companies that can now use it".
Specifically, the system automatically moves mortality from each cage to a pontoon equipped with a special silage cellar. Their operation is simple, requiring only one person remotely to operate. In addition, it can be done at any time of the day, even under adverse weather conditions thanks to its technology.
“It should be noted that the resources obtained from both patents will be invested in sustainability projects in the regions of southern Chile where our operations are present. Our goal in making them available to the industry is for the entire sector to move towards operations that coexist harmoniously with the ecosystem,” Zúñiga explained.
