Policy Brief of the INCAR2 Center represents a milestone since it is the first contribution to public policies since science in its new stage as an applied research center.

The Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research – Applied Research, INCAR2 , has published a new Policy Brief, "Employment of relocations as a tool to improve the sustainability of salmon farming".

The document developed by the researchers, Dr. Jessica Fuentes and Dr. Doris Soto analyzes how territorial reordering can be part of the solution to the environmental and health challenges facing the sector.

In simple terms, relocations consist of allowing a salmon growing centre to be moved within the same region to a new sector that presents better conditions for activity and the document details the different types of relocations. Critical barriers and challenges that require dialogue and wills around shared goals are also identified, as is the case with the CMPO Act and more recently the SBAP Act.

Thus, the document analyses the regulatory evolution associated with the use of space by salmon farming considering obstacles and opportunities for relocation, with a focus on reducing environmental and health risks especially in areas of higher risk or more sensitive. This requires improving monitoring systems, strengthening territorial governance, scientific evidence-based management and, in particular, improving the inter-agency coordination.
