These authorizations are an old aspiration of the Small Scale Aquaculture sector (APE) and to date 130 permits have already been issued in the Los Lagos Region.

In the framework of the implementation of the Mussel Law (Law 21.183), the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) maintains two calls for small-scale aquaculturists to apply for special seed collection permits in the communes of Hualaihué and Calbuco in the Los Lagos Region.

These authorizations are an administrative act by which the right of use and enjoyment of portions of sea and seabed are granted for the installation of seed collectors of mussels. With these permits, a long-standing desire of the Small-Scale Aquaculture (APE) sector is addressed.

For the commune of Hualaihué, the second call for applications for four collection polygons was opened. Meanwhile, for the commune of Calbuco, the first call was opened for applications for three collection polygons.

The deadline to apply for both competitions is until April 21, 2025 and among the requirements are:

  • To have developed the collection activity in the Region of Los Lagos.
  • Having held at least two permits of minor importance based on resolutions of this Undersecretary, within the period from 2000 to 31 December 2018, in the same polygon to which it applies.
  • To have an application for the concession of aquaculture in process in the same polygon that postulates.

Currently, 130 permits have been issued for the collection of chorito seeds, in the region of Los Lagos. In addition, the Territorial Planning Unit, under the Aquaculture Division, stresses that the beneficiaries contribute to the sustainability and conservation of natural resources, promoting more efficient and environmentally friendly aquaculture production. In addition, the issuance of these permits contributes to local economic development through the creation of employment and food security is improved by providing fresh aquatic products, which diversifys economic activities in coastal communities, opening up opportunities for research and access to regulated markets.
