The exhibition, which includes 40 photographs depicting five decades of salmon farming history in southern Chile, will be open to the public until November 16 at the Juan Pablo II Historical Museum.

With a ceremony at the Museo Histórico Juan Pablo II, the exhibition was inaugurated Salmon farming: 50 years in Chile, shows that brings together forty photographs that portray the development of the salmon farming industry in the southern part of the country. The event marks the closing of the photographic contest called by MOWI Chile and the Illustrious Municipality of Puerto Montt, which received more than a hundred images from photographers, workers and residents of the region.

The exhibition presents twenty selected works from the competition along with twenty historical photographs of the pioneer Alfonso Muenaoffering a visual tour that connects past and present, trade and landscape, memory and transformation.

"The idea was born together with the people from MOWI to celebrate the 50 years. I had photographs from 1975, so I took my album and we worked very well with the images. They are fantastic, they show step by step what happened: the first transports, the first foods, the rafts with drums... everything is there," said Muena, whose personal archive gives body to the historical section of the exhibition.

From the institutional sphere, Nicolás Mihovilovic, deputy manager of Public Affairs of MOWI Chile, highlighted the company's commitment to the territory and its role in linking this productive activity with the population.

“For MOWI it is essential to develop initiatives that link industry’s work with communities. This exhibition celebrates half a century of innovation, technology and collaboration with our environment. We are very proud of the call and look forward to roaming it to other places in southern Chile,” he announced.

Selection of images

The selection process was led by a multidisciplinary jury composed of five outstanding professionals in photography, anthropology and communications who had the mission of selecting 20 images for the exhibition and the three award-winning photographs in this unpublished commemorative competition.

Cristian Brown, audio-visual communicator and member of the jury, valued the technical and temporal diversity of the works that came to the contest “50 years of salmon farming in Chile”. “The winning image caught our attention from the beginning. It was black and white, different from most, and had a story of humanity with the sea, the fish and the pier. He summarized all the worlds in one image. The most interesting thing was to receive photographs of all the decades: 80's, 90's, the first digital of 2000. It’s a sample that allows you to learn how the salmon industry has been in these 50 years,” he said.

The first place was given to Giovanni Lambert, photographer of Puerto Varas, with the work “Hands, net and fish”. “The concept I chose was the people, the hands that build this industry. This photo had it a year ago and reflects how seafaring people shape salmon farming. I congratulate the industry for its 50 years and all the artists, photographers, workers and neighbors who participated,” he said.

The exhibition will be open to the public until November 16th on the first floor of the Juan Pablo II Museum. The opening ceremony was attended by the regional administrator of Los Lagos and deputy regional governor, Carlos Recondo, of the economics seremi, Luis Cárdenas, regional councillors, councillors, representatives of the Chilean Navy, special guests and the general public.
