Salmon farming was positioned behind copper and surpassed lithium and the forestry, fruit and viticulture industries.

This week, the Central Bank of Chile (BCCh) delivered its most recent Statistical Bulletin which contains the figures of the main activity and employment indicators, monetary and financial information, prices and wages, exports and imports, trade balance, balance of payments, international reserves, foreign investment, Chilean investment abroad, external debt, international indicators and information contained in economic expectations surveys of the country.

In the extensive document, the issuing body details the exports of salmon in millions of dollars of each month of 2022 and also of 2023, in addition to the total of 2020 and 2021.

This information allows to evidence the significant increase recorded from 2021 to 2022, and although 2022 was slightly higher than 2023, these two last years have closed with a total higher than US$6,100 million, which even exceeds lithium shipments and makes salmon the second most important export product for the country after copper.

We are happy, because these figures once again highlight the importance of this productive sector not only for the south-southern region, but also for the country, being the second most exported product during 2023. We have recovered the level of exports that we projected prior to the pandemic and we hope that in the coming years we can continue on this path," said the president of SalmonChile, Arturo Clément.
