Project considers 35% of Multi X's annual production and has a positive impact in the United States, the main export destination of the salmon farming company.
As part of their Sustainability Strategy, Multi X Recently closed a tender to replace all the bags it uses for packaging fresh fillet product, with bags made from 100% biodegradable material. This breaks down within a period of between 6 to 20 months without needing to be composted, being consumed by fungi and microorganisms.
It is a volume of more than 18 million bags per year that will be produced by Bioelements, Chilean startup based on biotechnology and circular economy that started in 2016 the challenge of generating sustainable bioplastics that contribute to reducing pollution on the planet.
Fernando Pérez, commercial and marketing manager of Multi X explained that “the company is the largest supplier of fresh salmon products and exports 42 thousand tonnes of fresh fillets annually in whole fish equivalent (WFE), representing 35% of our total production. These new packaging materials will therefore have a very positive impact on our production and the environment and mark an important step towards carbon neutrality.”
By their part, Daniel Santa Cruz, Multi X Supply Manager“This agreement is the result of a work of more than two years with Bioelements, a period in which different tests were carried out to ensure the performance and optimal characteristics of this new packaging throughout the product’s useful life, which were successfully concluded.”

The Bioelements value proposal, developed in more than seven years of research and development, considers packaging based on biodegradable material under different conditions, such as industrial composting, landfill disposal, biodegradation in the environment and marine biodegradation.
On new packaging, Ignacio Parada, CEO of Bioelements“This is a biodegradable alternative that will have a positive impact on the environment. Bioelements unibanda bags maintain the same mechanical, barrier and operating characteristics as conventional materials, with the value that they biodegrade in 6 to 20 months under different conditions.”
“This alternative will allow Multi X to offer its customers biodegradable bags that serve as food for fungi and micro-organisms in their final disposal, thus helping to curb contamination by accumulation of waste. People are increasingly demanding that companies take on environmental challenges and this project will certainly add value to the brand within the industry and open the doors for further development projects as a whole,” Parada added.
