The event, which will take place in Valdivia between 1 and 6 December, will address the issues, solutions and challenges of salmon and trout introduced into freshwater and marine ecosystems, under a scenario of global and social change.
The Austral Invasive Salmonid Nucleus (Invasal)), together with the University of Concepcion and the Austral University of Chile, is organizing the III International Symposium on Introduced Salmonids to be held from December 1 to 6, 2024, in southern Chile, in the city of Valdivia, specifically at the Isla Teja Campus of the UACh. The maximum deadline for submitting abstracts is July 31.
This event aims to bring together the national and international community of scientists, administrators/inspectors and users who share knowledge and experiences to address the issues, solutions and challenges of introduced salmon and trout in freshwater and marine ecosystems, under a scenario of global and social change. "We hope to have the presence of researchers, professionals, teachers, fishermen, industry, operators" tourism and public servants of the administration and control, with the aim of integrating traditional and scientific knowledge with a transdisciplinary approach. The aim is a deeper understanding of local communities and ecosystems that interact and host salmon and trout,” explained the UACh academic, researcher at INVASAL and one of the organizers of the event, Dr. Pablo Fierro.

With regard to the importance of this initiative, Dr. Fierro explained that the introduced species significantly impact the ecosystems where they live worldwide, and may cause local extinctions of native species. “An example of this are the salmon and trout that were introduced into our country since the end of the XIX century,” he said, adding that “understanding the impact of these introduced species becomes relevant to take correct management decisions in marine and freshwater ecosystems.”
The symposium will include plenary sessions of renowned national and international scientists, talks, posters, fishing information stands, workshops, courses and visits to renowned tourist sites in the region.
Invasive and its role in environmental problems
The multidisciplinary team of Invasal covers the study of a wide variety of disciplines linked to salmonids, such as ecology, genomics, socioecology, genetics, political ecology and environmental ethics. “Our researchers belong to multiple universities throughout the country, allowing us to study salmonid species introduced from Arica to Punta Arenas. As an Invasal team we seek to identify and help address the environmental challenges of the aquaculture industry, such as salmon leaks, and also help address knowledge gaps to strengthen a recreational fishing industry of national and international importance.” Director of the Invasal Core, and researcher at the University of Concepción, Dr. Daniel Gómez Uchida.
The place of the Symposium will be in Valdivia, Los Ríos region, at the Faculty of Sciences of the Isla Teja campus of the Universidad Austral de Chile.
