A total of 9 students from Master of Aquaculture Nutrition (MNA) from the Austral University of Chile head office Puerto Montt, of the 2023 promotion, carried out a successful internship at the LINDEAACUA of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) in the Ensenada Headquarters in Mexico.

International activity is part of the mandatory subject of the program entitled Practical application in the extrusion plant, code ACUI380, and was carried out in the Laboratory belonging to Oceanological Research Institute under the cooperation agreement between the two universities.

During the stay MNA students carried out extrusion activities from the preparation of ingredients and mixed to extrude; assembly of various screw combinations for sunken and floating extrudes; extrusion of a sunken diet under various combinations of pressure, temperature and steam, drying; and evaluation of expansion characteristics; gelatinized and buoyancy of the various extruded obtained.

As indicated by the Dr. Ana Farías, Director of the Master in Aquaculture Nutrition, and academic responsible for the group, this activity complements with practical training, in an international standard laboratory, the formation of basic theory in one of the 3 areas of the program, which is that of Formulated Food Production Technology.

“This exchange allows students to work under an intensive experimental scheme at the UABC experimental plant, which is used by Extrutech for international extrusion courses. All this with the accompaniment of the responsible professor Dr. Maria Teresa Viana and the technical direction of the MSc. Aurora Tinajeros,” said Dr. Farias.

He added: “The international stay in Mexico is an activity of the MNA, which also allows students to interact and create networks with professionals and graduate students of the Autonomous University of Baja California. Through the interaction we have with Dr. Viana, the same program is also being created at the UABC in a double degree scheme involving stays of Mexican students in Chile.”
