Research proposes the production of a bioproduct based on a protein extract derived from ruminal microorganisms, which not only provides a high biological value due to its profile rich in essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals, but also has functional properties.
Dr Alejandro Velasquez, from the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the School of Natural Resources of the University of Catholic Temuco, with its project "Protein extract with functional properties originated from ruminal microorganisms evaluated in diets for Atlantic salmon juveniles", won the IDeA I+D 2024 Competition, FONDEF, of the National Agency for Research and Development, ANID.
This call from ANID aimed to promote the development of science and technology-based research and innovation projects in close collaboration with the private sector, civil society and the State, contributing to the increase of competitiveness, well-being and quality of life of the population.
The project led by Dr. Velásquez addresses a critical challenge in aquaculture, specifically in the production of Atlantic salmon Atlantic salmonHigh demand for protein supplements in the industry, which represent around 60% or more of the diet of these fish, together with increasing economic and ecological pressure on traditional protein sources, drives the search for innovative alternatives.

Applied research proposes the production of a bioproduct based on a protein extract derived from ruminal microorganisms, which not only provides a high biological value due to its profile rich in essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals, but also has functional properties that could benefit the health and growth of salmon.
The initiative is based on the use of agricultural waste as fermentative substrates for the cultivation of these microorganisms, offering a sustainable and economically viable solution.

It emphasizes the importance of this approach due to its ability to reduce dependence on conventional protein sources, such as fishmeal, whose availability and cost have been problematic in recent decades.
The project establishes a strategic partnership with the company Vitapro Chile, collaboration that will enrich the development of applied research through meetings focused on the market evaluation for the bioproduct, as well as on the contribution to the experimental design of the diets for salmonids.
