It is the result of almost a decade of work between private individuals, the aquaculture-fisheries institution and the country's international relations.
This week, the Chilean National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) confirmed that the Acuícola Alas plant, located in the commune of Parral, Maule region, carried out the first export of 500 grams of Ossetra sturgeon caviar to Belgium, a country that is part of the European Union (UE) and whose capital, Brussels, is the diplomatic headquarters of the aforementioned international organization.
Together with highlighting that this milestone was achieved after passing a rigorous inspection process, the regional director of Sernapesca Maule, Héctor Pontigo, emphasized that it is a major advance for the sector and constitutes a reference point for the country's foreign trade.
The Alas Aquaculture plant is supplied by the La Casona aquaculture center, also located in Parral. It is the only plant in Chile producing caviar of this species. Currently, the cultivation center is under the High Risk Disease Surveillance Program (EAR) and the plant is under our Quality Assurance Program (PAC), thus meeting the high sanitary and safety standards set by the European Union detailed Pontigo.
In turn, it valued that this first export is the result of almost a decade of work between private individuals and the public institutional framework of the aquaculture-fishing sector, along with Chile's international relations.
From Italy
The first sturgeon breeders arrived at the breeding center in 2013 from Italy, and took between seven and eight years to produce one of the most sophisticated and recognized gourmet products in the world: caviar.
After obtaining all the relevant export permits and certifications, this product from Maule was shipped from Santiago airport (Metropolitan region) to the EU, one of the most competitive markets in terms of caviar.
