The Undersecretary confirmed that a high-level team was established, led by doctors from the Shanghai Maritime University, "who are studying the interaction mechanisms between artisanal fishing and marine mammals, for which they will schedule a visit to the country during the first half of the year."

The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Julio Salas, was part of a national delegation that was in the People's Republic of China for five days, along with the director of the National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture, María Soledad Tapia and Senator Fidel Espinoza -chairperson of the Maritime Interests, Fisheries and Aquaculture Senate Committee- as well as representatives of the fisheries institutions and also representatives of artisanal fishing.

Among the various stops on the trip -which included a visit to a research centre in aquaculture, technical visits related to offshore fishing in the coastal city of Zhoushan and a meeting with experts and researchers from the Shanghai Maritime University, among other activities- the national delegation was able to meet with various authorities of the Asian country, achieving major agreements and commitments of Face to the future in fisheries and aquaculture. Among the activities carried out by Undersecretary Salas, a meeting in Beijing on February 26th with Zhang Zhili, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, stands out, where they exchanged views on promoting fisheries cooperation between that country and Chile.

"We have managed to establish a cooperation link with different bodies of the Chinese Academy, in particular with the University of Shanghai and the Chinese Academy of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences, to generate exchange with our scientific world and also technological exchange to improve the conditions of the artisanal fishing activity," explained Undersecretary Salas.

Among the agreements made within the framework of this visit, is the technological and scientific support that will be provided through a technical working group from the University of Shanghai, whose delegation will come to the country during this year with the aim of supporting the research and development of technologies to deter the presence of sea lions in areas of artisanal fishing.

We are very satisfied with the result of this visit, particularly because our Chinese counterparts have set up a high level team led by doctors from the Shanghai Maritime University who are studying the interaction mechanisms between artisanal fishing and marine mammals, for which they will schedule a visit to the country during the first half of the year and we will probably be able to have technological solutions that "improve the conditions of artisanal fishing thanks to this cooperation," added the Subpesca authority.

The above, emphasizing that there are different areas of action in which the coordination between both countries will continue to advance after this visit, which projects progress related to aquaculture activities as well as fishing issues, "particularly also the exchange with the scientific and academic world between Chile and China. We hope that all of this becomes a reality during 2025," concluded the undersecretary.
